⚫ The terrible slaughter (battle of that great day)

It is Christ and his mighty army of angels that will do the treading, or the squeezing, of the grapes. So enormous will be that battle that the flow of blood is described as reaching "even unto the horse bridles". Since in ancient times horses were used almost exclusively for war purposes, this indicates that the great treading of the wine-press is the "battle of that great day of God Almighty". The fact that the blood reaches to the bridle of the horse does not indicate that the horse would be overcome, but it indicates that the blood will run deep enough for a horse to swim therein. It is a symbolic way of describing the terrible slaughter that shall be wrought.
